About the Project

CSBC, in partnership with Oxford University, is undertaking a large-scale qualitative and quantitative social network analysis study to identify falsified and substandard (SF) human antimicrobial sources and trade routes and evaluate their likely impact on patient outcome and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in India. As part of a larger global project led by Oxford University spanning several countries, efforts from this research will involve the development of a risk assessment map of SF antimicrobials to inform public health threats and develop an evidence-based guide identifying critical points of intervention.

Roles and Responsibilities

As part of the above-mentioned study, CSBC is looking to hire up to two postdoctoral research candidates to work with the Principal Investigators and execute the research project in India. As part of the position, the candidate will be expected to:

  • Conduct literature reviews to deepen understanding of the prior work in the space and research methodologies employed.
  • Work with the Principal Investigator to design the research framework and tools and lead on-ground, ethnographic field research to track the network of SF drugs in India, including (but not limited to) preparation of interview questions, recruitment of interview subjects, and maintaining accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary
  • Lead the collection and analysis of data from the field research. Ensure the smooth delivery of the data collection process in line with developed research protocols and conduct regular quality control checks on data entry during the data collection phase.
  • Providing project management support as needed towards the project, including preparing materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations, management of project-related stakeholders and logistics, attendance of project meetings and seminars in person and online, and development of articles, reports, and presentations
  • Work with the Principal Investigator to mitigate project risks and monitor the quality and timeliness of project execution and deliverables.
  • Ensure presence and preparation for on-site project team discussions and meetings.

An ideal candidate would be:


  • Currently enrolled in or has completed a Ph.D. program in sociology, psychology, anthropology, economics, statistics, public policy or related fields.
  • Excellent academic record and work ethic are required.
  • A strong qualitative research background is essential. Research work samples are a plus. Previous ethnographic research and investigative journalism experience are strong pluses.
  • Experience with qualitative data coding and analysis is essential.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English are a must. Speaking proficiency in Hindi and other Indian languages is desirable.
  • Willingness to travel, as required, for field work across India and the UK.
  • A Master’s or PhD degree in sociology, psychology, anthropology, economics, statistics, public policy or related fields
  • 2-3 years experience managing qualitative and quantitative research projects with a supervisor. Experience with ethnographic research methodologies and investigative journalism approaches is a plus.
  • Ability to engage with a diverse set of on-ground stakeholders in research to uncover insights
  • Has strong situational awareness that they employ in their fieldwork
  • Ability to manage and respond to varied tasks in a quick and efficient manner
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Fluency in English, along with conversational skills in at least one Indian language
  • Prior experience with project management and execution of research studies on the ground
  • Ability to exercise independent decision-making about the progression of the research project and methodologies
  • Prior experience in designing and leading qualitative interviews with a wide range of stakeholders in diverse settings
  • Familiarity with qualitative research tools & packages such as NVIVO and AtlasTi is a plus.
Skill Sets
  • Proficiency with Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google software (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Calendar.
  • Proficiency with Slack, Trello and other management tools highly desirable.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Creative problem-solving abilities (logistics, people-related, HR, searching for resources, researching other organisations, including government)
  • Can do attitude, independent, take ownership; can attend meetings and offer support in front-facing situations
  • Is friendly, cheerful, and compassionate!

Applicants should be authorized to work in India. While the role is remote, we prefer candidates based in New Delhi. Applicants will need to have their laptops and access to a functioning internet connection. They must have the willingness and capacity to travel across India for fieldwork.
